Consulting on Portrait Photography Lighting in Shenzhen

his Sunday, I’ll be heading to Shenzhen, China, to consult for a new photography studio. Their current setup is limited to a few low-cost LED fixtures. While these lights may seem convenient, they fall short when it comes to professional portrait photography. LEDs often struggle with accurate color rendering, which means skin tones look flat or unnatural, and fixing that in post-production is both time-consuming and often unsatisfactory.

True portrait photography isn’t just about pointing a camera—it’s about understanding light, color, and how they shape mood and personality. Unfortunately, too many so-called “portrait photographers” today overlook this foundation. They rely on gear that simply cannot deliver professional results, and the images suffer for it.

That’s why proper studio lighting—strobe or flash systems with precise color control—is still the backbone of professional portrait work. I’ll be sharing advice with the studio on how to upgrade their lighting so they can move from struggling with fixes in post to getting it right in-camera. Good photography starts with light, and knowing how to use it makes all the difference.
