New to Hiring a Photographer? Don’t Just Throw Meat at the Wall.
If you're new to the world of marketing communication and need to hire a photographer for the first time, you're not alone—and you're definitely not the first to feel unsure. Maybe your boss says, “We need a headshot session next week,” or “Let’s update the company image for the new campaign,” and suddenly, you’re Googling “photographer in Hong Kong” and hoping for the best.
No one gave you a handbook on how to choose the right one. So what happens next? Many new marcom folks end up sending the same vague brief to five different photographers, hoping that someone replies with something that feels right.
That’s what we call “throwing meat at the wall.”
Here’s the Problem with That Approach
While it might work for ordering takeaway, it’s not ideal for selecting a creative partner. Photographers aren’t just vendors—they’re visual collaborators. And like any other part of your campaign, the more strategic your decision, the better the result.
Not every photographer is right for every job. Some specialize in weddings, others in fashion editorials, others in product photography. If you're working in the corporate space, you need someone who understands visual consistency, branding guidelines, lighting control, and most importantly—how to make busy executives look confident and approachable in under 10 minutes.
What to Look For in a Corporate Photographer
If you're hiring for a corporate headshot, portrait, or campaign:
Look at the portfolio. Does their style fit your brand?
Ask about experience in corporate environments—not just photography in general.
Discuss turnaround time. You don’t want delays when there’s a newsletter deadline.
Ask if they understand image usage licensing. It matters more than you think.
And yes—get quotes. But don’t make price your only filter. A cheap photographer with no lighting knowledge can cost you more in reshoots and retouching than hiring the right person from the start.
