Why C-Stands Are Not for Mounting Lights

In the past decade, I’ve noticed a growing trend on YouTube where many photographers recommend using C-stands for mounting lights. While these videos might look convincing, this advice is misleading—and in practice, unsafe.

The truth is simple: C-stands were never designed to hold lights. Their purpose is to support modifiers, flags, reflectors, and grip equipment. They are excellent for managing accessories because of their sturdy build and ability to tuck into tight spaces on set.

However, when it comes to mounting lighting fixtures—especially heavier ones—the right choice is always a combo stand. Combo stands are engineered with the proper weight capacity, locking mechanisms, and stability to safely support lights. Using the wrong stand risks not only damaging expensive gear but also injuring crew or clients.

It’s important for new photographers to understand that the “shortcut” tips they see online can cost them more in the long run. Good lighting is not just about creativity—it’s also about safety, efficiency, and using the right tools for the job.

So next time you see someone suggesting a C-stand for a light, remember: keep your lights on combo stands, and let the C-stand do what it does best—supporting modifiers.
