Why Do Some People Enquire About Photography… Then Disappear? A Look at Ghosting in Our Industry

Every photographer has experienced it: someone fills out the contact form, asks detailed questions, maybe even discusses dates and photo usage — then suddenly disappears without a trace. No reply, no follow-up, no explanation. It’s as if they vanished right after clicking “Send.”

In the past few years, I’ve noticed this happening more frequently. Some messages look serious, some look questionable, and a few feel like automated bots pretending to be real people. Whether intentional or not, these situations waste valuable time — especially for professional photographers who prepare quotes, check availability, and plan logistics for every potential client.

This blog post is not about naming or shaming anyone. Instead, it’s about documenting the patterns behind these disappearances and helping other photographers recognize them early. From incomplete briefs to mismatched email domains, from unrealistic expectations to copy-and-paste enquiries sent to dozens of photographers at once — each case teaches us something about how to protect our time and stay efficient.

Ghosting happens across many industries, but in photography, where preparation and communication matter, it hits harder. By sharing these experiences (without exposing anyone), we can help build awareness, improve screening workflows, and create better habits in how we manage enquiries.

As I continue to receive unusual, confusing, or suddenly silent messages, I’ll keep updating these insights. Hopefully, fellow photographers — especially those running their own studios — will find these notes helpful in navigating today’s unpredictable enquiry landscape.
